Connection for chapters 1-5
People will go to any lengths in many situations to achieve their goals. Conner killed Latamer just to prove a point that helped him, if minimally.
Conner is willing to dispose of any person/information that troubles him at the same time as using others' work to benefit him without credit. This is similar to plagiarism in today's time. People, such as dictators, are also willing to dispose of others when it benefits them, and they will go to any lengths for their wants.

Connection for chapters 5-10
People will look down at others and overlook their own personality flaws. I know that others will scoff at the weaknesses in others but do not realize they have similar, or more extreme flaws themselves. It's easy to see others' errors and weaknesses but hard to recognize your own. Even I sometimes think in this way. I will doubt someone, but I will refuse to accept that someone else is right and I am wrong. Conner seems to be telling himself that he is a patriot and is doing something in the best interest of Carthya, when really he is greedy and committing the equivalent of treason.

Connection for chapters 10-15
People will attempt to make themselves, or others, into what they are not. People will change their personality from what they really are to fit the others they are with. Conner is doing something similar with the orphans. He is trying to make the boys into princes when they are not at all. They have neither the personality, nor the traits of a royal, and yet they are forced to become one. Conner is forcing them to learn to live a life of lies. Today too, it is important to be true to oneself.

Jealousy and envy are strong motivating factors for many people. The servants working for Conner abused Imogen as they believed that she was getting special treatment from Conner. They wanted to be the ones with a special opportunity, hoping that they might not be indentured anymore. We all want to be special too, but we need to do this without wanting to compare ourselves to others.

Connection for chapters 20-25
It is human nature to want power, and some prefer power over others. Rather than really wanting the "gold", Conner would prefer to use this as a way of stating his power over someone else. This is very similar to dictators who attempt to use an object or person to break the will of enemies. Rather than taking the object, they use it as a piece to gain control, power, influence, and superiority over another.

Even though some people convince themselves that they are someone who they are not, such as Tobias, they still will occasionally be frightened that who they really are will be revealed, and they act in extreme and illogical ways because of this. When people are not trustworthy, they do not know who to trust either, and they tend not to trust anyone, which puts them in a difficult and lonely spot.

Appearances and social status can be deceiving to someone's real role in life. Amarinda is royalty and of a high class, but she is a servant to her country, as she creates peace and has no real choice in life. She is a front to an attempt with peace, yet has no say in this matter. This is not dissimilar to certain situations in life where the people on the front of an idea are not related to the idea's origin: they are just marketing or advertising the idea, but they are not free to modify it.

Perceived intentions can be more powerful than actual intentions. Veldergrath came to Farthenwood in a show of power to intimidate Conner. He showed up with armed soldiers for show, not actual battle. This is a carefully planned illusion that is very common in other ways in the real world, for example when dictators show off their weapons during military parades in other to intimidate other nations.

Connection for chapters 40-45
Work can tire a mind so that it will think of the smallest of details but miss a basic point. Conner had the orphans trained in royal acting and etiquette; yet, he forgot a simple parlor trick that the prince was famous for. Sometimes, you need to look at the broad concepts instead of the tiny details in order to make something work.

Need is different than want. It is sometimes difficult for a person to see the difference. I, along with others, am susceptible to wanting much, such as Jaron wants his family, but this is not always what is needed. Carthya needed Jaron to stay "dead" so that it did not need to start a war with countries it had hoped to make alliances with.

In the heat of personal desire, you can forget certain things and overlook important facts, just as Bevin Conner overlooked that he had the real prince of Carthya under his roof the entire time of his plot but only realized it after it was publicly announced. You see what you want to see, and it's easy to forget that your perspective is not the only one or that it's not even the correct one.
