Orphanage- The orphanages of Carthya. The four boys that Conner takes for his secret plans are from these too small, unhygienic, abusive, malnourished, and cruel establishments. When Jaron became an "orphan", he went to the orphanage. He came with silver coins and claimed he was the son of a dead duke. When the coins ran out, he faked an illness and "confessed" that he was a nobody who stole the coins.
Woods- The woods are where Conner spends his first night with the orphans. Conner tells those who do not want to be part of his plan that they can leave. Conner has Latamer killed in cold blood, which makes the orphans realize the extent Conner will go to accomplish his plan.
Farthenwood-Farthenwood, in the west of Carthya, is Bevin Conner's estate. This was originally Conner's father's house, which was designed to intimidate visitors and show the family's great wealth. According to Sage, Farthenwood could fit several of his old orphanage. Farthenwood has many secrets. This is where Conner lives and the orphans train for two weeks. They learn reading and writing, the history of Carthya, horse back riding, sword fighting, and etiquette.
-Stables- The stables are where the orphans learn horse back riding from Cregan. On the first day, Sage challenges Cregan to a riding contest and is carried away by a wild horse. Sage is hurt in this incident, and Cregan dislikes Sage even more because of the trouble he was in for the loss of the horse.
-Secret Passages- In the walls of Farthenwood are secret passages. These are used in many ways. Sage first discovers them when he is locked out of his room by Tobias and has to find a way back to is room. The entrance that Sage found was in Connerś room behind a tapestry. The passages connect to many rooms, and Sage eventually found his way back. Later, Tobias ambushes Sage in the passages and cuts him in the back using a kitchen knife. The walls are also where the orphans hide when Veldergrath arrives. When Sage realizes they left evidence in the room, he has to storm in and kill one of Veldergrath's soldiers.
-Dungeon- After refusing to tell Conner what was so important about the piece of fool's gold, Sage is taken to the dungeon and tortured. Mott and Cregan whip a defenseless Sage, and Cregan torments him with food. The marks left in this dungeon become permanent scars. This is a dark stone room with iron bars. Sage commented that the dungeon smelled of "urine".
-Great hall- This is where the princess Amarinda is given dinner by Conner, and the orphans wait on her. When she enters, Sage tells the princess that she has dirt on her face, which she gratefully has wiped off. This is an action that is un-servant like and makes him stick out.
Inn/Boarding room- While staying here, Conner teaches Sage the information needed to fool the regents. Conner also has Mott tie Sage up so that he can abuse him until he agrees to name Conner the prime regent and to demote Veldergrath. Sage receives bruises and a small cut on his neck from Conner.
Palace- This is where Sage/Jaron grew up. Jaron set hundreds of years worth of tapestries on fire, challenged the king of Mendenwal to a duel, and created other forms of mischief all at the palace. This is also where Sage/Jaron is proved to be the real prince and is crowned the king of Carthya.
-Palace Entrance- This is the location where a guard is screening carriages. There are many fake princes attempting to get in, all of which were turned away, including Sage and Conner.
-Kitchen Passage- The orphans and Conner have to use this entrance to the palace as they were turned away at the door. While walking down this way, Cregan and Roden turn on them. Because they are at a stalemate, Sage and Roden fight. Roden has the upper hand until he is tricked. Cregan tries to attack Sage, but Mott kills him.
-Great Hall- This is where the regents meet and announce the deaths of the royal family members. Conner arrives late and disputes the topic until a commotion in the throne room distracts them.
-Jaron's room- This is Jaron's room when he was still living in the palace. Jaron hid his real sword under a loose board beneath his bed.
-Throne room- This is the room where Jaron/Sage is declared king, and Conner attempts to kill him. This is where the end of the book takes place and Jaron/Sage sits on his father's throne.
