Sage, an Avenian orphan in Carthya, is a rebellious thief, who would rather use trickery than force. Sage succeeds in annoying many people, whether through personality, actions, or demeanor. He is sometimes a hot-headed, impolite, and aggravating child. Sage though, puts up this front, and really does care about others and is still child-like in his beliefs about parts of the world. This is shown when Latamer is killed or when Conner reveals his plan. Sage has a quick mind and strong will but refuses to obey the commands of others out of point and habit rather than actual reasoning. Sage is a small and malnourished orphan, but he is really Prince Jaron in hiding, which is found out later in the novel. When it happens, he shows through his fairness and character that he is really up to the task of becoming king. Sage is in between the others as far as size and girth. He is the closest to the prince in appearance, as he is the prince.

"'None of us is going to exceed Darius.'
'You won't,' Roden said.
I had no comeback for him. My whole life was a testament to the truth of that fact."
Sage, who is later found out to be Jaron, says this before everyone knows his identity, including the reader. Sage, in the later part of the book, and the series, explains that he was always compared to his brother, Darius. Jaron is said to have been less mature, and knowledgeable than Darius, so it is not surprising that he acted up quite a bit, because it is a very hard position to be in.

{Tobias} "'You seem bent on making enemies here.'
{Sage} 'And you insist on making false friends. They're no different. Don't you ever get tired of pretending to be something you're not?'"
Sage, rather than seeing what he wants, sees reality and dislikes those who believe in lies that they themselves created. Sage would rather see the truth, even if it is brutal, rather than seeing his own fantasies. This shows his wanting for truth and understanding of lsothe world. What he says is that false friends are no friends at all: they will turn against you. Also, as Jaron in disguise, he knows a thing or two about pretending to be someone else.

"I obeyed, and watched as he set the crown on my head. The weight of it resurrected a flood of memories for me. As of that moment, I was the prince again. And soon the entire country would know it."
This shows the transformation from still really feeling like the orphan Sage, to remembering his past and getting back to what he was before. Just a physical and symbolic reminder of his past set of a new bout of memories. Sage was no longer an orphan boy, but rather he was Prince Jaron. After all this time in hiding, the truth is out for the whole country to know.
